Table of Contents

  1. Frost Mage
  2. Arcane Mage
  3. Fire Mage

Frost Mage

Overview

Midnight-specific changes:
- Icy Veins removed — Ray of Frost is the new main DPS cooldown
- Glacial Spike and Comet Storm no longer standalone buttons — they transform your Frostbolt and Ray of Frost keys when available; no keybind change needed
- Shifting Power removed from the game entirely
- Glacial Bulwark (passive) gives Ice Barrier and Ice Cold each an additional charge
- Cold Snap (5 min) resets Ice Barrier and Ice Cold charges — save for emergencies
- Mirror Image and Greater Invisibility are utility spells in Midnight, not primary defensives

Hero Talents

Frostfire (recommended Raid, burst, and outdoor content)
- Flurry becomes a Frostfire variant; Glacial Spike explodes on impact for AoE damage
- Front-loaded damage profile — better for short windows and defined vulnerability phases
- Apex Talent — Hand of Frost: Grants a second charge to Ray of Frost; pool a charge for trinket procs or boss windows
- Ice Lance Threshold: 10+ Freezing stacks (or Fingers of Frost proc — always)

Spellslinger (recommended M+ and sustained AoE)
- Better sustained AoE via more frequent Frozen Orb casts; Splintering Orbs makes Orb a primary Frost Splinter generator
- More consistent output over longer fights; slightly lower burst ceiling than Frostfire
- Ice Lance Threshold: 6+ Freezing stacks (spend more freely)

Tier Set — Mage Frost 12.0

Core Mechanics

Freezing Stacks:
- Applied by: Frostbolt, Flurry, Ray of Frost
- Caps at: 20 stacks
- Consumed by: Ice Lance (damage scaled to stack count) and Comet Storm
- The loop: Build stacks → spend with Ice Lance or Comet Storm → repeat

Brain Freeze:
- 25% proc chance off Frostbolt; your next Flurry deals 50% extra damage and resets cooldown
- Thermal Void interaction: After consuming Brain Freeze, next Ice Lance (within 8s) Shatters 12 stacks WITHOUT consuming any — massive spike
- React immediately. Never let Brain Freeze drop.

Fingers of Frost:
- Ice Lance deals damage as if target had maximum Freezing stacks, without consuming them — free full-power Ice Lance
- Both a resource dump AND a stack preservation tool
- React immediately — do not hold

Glacial Spike: Transforms your Frostbolt button when available. Press Frostbolt key as normal; fires automatically. In Frostfire, explodes on impact for AoE.

Comet Storm: Transforms your Ray of Frost key immediately after the channel ends. Let it fire automatically. In Frostfire, includes an additional Meteor impact.

Ray of Frost: 5-second channel — your main DPS cooldown. FRAGILE: Any movement cancels it. No Ice Floes. Plan every cast around being stationary for 5 full seconds.

Rotation — Single Target (Frostfire)

Opener:
1. Frostbolt (pre-cast, −2s before pull)
2. Frozen Orb — start Freezing stack buildup immediately
3. Ray of Frost — main cooldown; fire during a stationary window at pull
4. Comet Storm — fires automatically after Ray of Frost ends; let it go
5. Glacial Spike — if Frostbolt button has transformed, fire immediately
6. Flurry — on Brain Freeze proc
7. Ice Lance — Thermal Void window after Brain Freeze, or Fingers of Frost proc
8. Continue with priority list

Priority Ability Why
1 Frozen Orb On cooldown always. Generates Freezing stacks, grants Brain Freeze via Wintertide, AoE damage. Never hold.
2 Glacial Spike (Frostbolt transforms) Extremely high single-hit damage. Explodes for AoE in Frostfire. Press Frostbolt key — it fires when ready.
3 Comet Storm (Ray of Frost key transforms) Fires immediately after Ray of Frost channel ends. Don't skip it.
4 Flurry on Brain Freeze proc 50% increased damage + large Freezing stack application. React immediately.
5 Ice Lance (Thermal Void window) After consuming Brain Freeze, your next Ice Lance within 8s Shatters 12 stacks without consuming. Fire immediately after Flurry.
6 Ice Lance with Fingers of Frost Free full-power Ice Lance without consuming stacks. React immediately.
7 Ice Lance at 10+ Freezing stacks Spend before you cap at 20. Frostfire threshold is 10.
8 Flurry (charge available, no proc) Use a charge rather than sit on two charges.
9 Ray of Frost Main cooldown — use when stationary for 5 full seconds. Fires Comet Storm when it ends.
10 Frostbolt Core filler. Generates Freezing stacks, 25% Brain Freeze proc.

Rotation — Single Target (Spellslinger)

Same as Frostfire with two differences:
- Ice Lance threshold: 6+ stacks (spend more freely)
- Frozen Orb is even higher priority — Splintering Orbs makes it your primary Frost Splinter generator; never hold it

Rotation — AoE (M+, 3+ Targets)

Frost naturally cleaves 2 targets. AoE rotation takes over at 3+.

Priority Ability Notes
1 Blizzard On cooldown — core AoE; applies slow to all targets
2 Frozen Orb On cooldown — tracks targets, AoE Freezing buildup
3 Glacial Spike (Frostfire) Explodes on impact — free AoE on the whole pack
4 Comet Storm After Ray of Frost — massive AoE hit
5 Flurry on Brain Freeze Still important — applies Freezing stacks to all nearby
6 Ice Lance at threshold or Fingers of Frost Same rules as ST
7 Frostbolt Filler — still applies Freezing, still procs Brain Freeze

Cooldowns

Cooldown CD Usage
Ray of Frost ~1.5 min Main DPS cooldown. Use when you can guarantee a stationary 5s window. Comet Storm fires right after — treat as a paired combo. Never cast into movement.
Frozen Orb ~1 min On cooldown always. Tracks mobs after 3s — aim slightly ahead for instant tracking. In M+, aim at center of pack.
Cold Snap 5 min DEFENSIVE ONLY. Resets Ice Barrier and Ice Cold charges. Save for emergencies — a dangerous repeating mechanic or lethal incoming hit.

Defensives

Frost Mage has the best defensive toolkit of any caster. Use it aggressively.

Defensive CD Effect When to Use
Ice Barrier Low (2 charges) ~30% max HP absorb Use freely on every big hit. Two charges — keep cycling.
Ice Block 5 min Full immunity, clears most debuffs Major mechanic you can't avoid, or kill attempts
Ice Cold 5 min Shorter duration immunity Alternative to Ice Block — same function
Glacial Bulwark Passive Ice Barrier + Ice Cold each gain +1 charge Always active — makes Frost exceptionally durable
Cold Snap 5 min Resets Ice Barrier + Ice Cold charges Emergency reset after burning both Ice Barrier charges
Mirror Image 3 min Creates decoys, brief absorb Drop threat or buy positioning time

M+ note: Ice Barrier is not a save-it button. Use it on every avoidable AoE you don't step out of. With two charges via Glacial Bulwark, treat it like a passive rotation button.

Stat Priority

PvE: Intellect > Mastery = Critical Strike > Haste > Versatility

Always sim on Raidbots before upgrade decisions. Frost stat weights shift significantly with gear. A 10-ilvl upgrade almost always beats any secondary stat swap.

PvP: Intellect > Versatility > Haste > Mastery > Critical Strike

Consumables

Slot Item Why
Flask Flask of the Magisters Best Intellect flask for casters
Potion Potion of Recklessness Pop at Ray of Frost + Comet Storm opener. Sim vs Light's Potential if spec leans Crit.
Food Royal Roast Best personal food — Intellect
Food (feast) Harandar Celebration Feast Use when group sets one out
Weapon Thalassian Phoenix Oil Best caster weapon enchant
Rune Void-Touched Augment Rune Primary stat buff — use on progression and timed keys
Gem (first) Indecipherable Eversong Diamond Primary socket bonus gem
Gem (rest) Sim your character Frost gem choice depends on stat distribution
Health Pot Silvermoon Health Potion Emergency use only

Crest Upgrade Priority: Weapon (staff/offhand) → Trinkets → Helmet/Chest/Legs → other slots

Trinket priority: Vaelgor's Final Stare and Gaze of the Alnseer are BiS for Frost Mage in Season 1. Hero or Myth track versions beat Myth track of most alternatives.

M+ Utility

Ability Use Case
Counterspell Your interrupt — most important M+ utility. Use a Focus Kick macro. Never waste on low-priority casts.
Frost Nova Roots everything in melee range — gives tank time to reposition or defensive peel
Ring of Frost Ground-target AoE root — lock dangerous mobs in a pack
Blizzard AoE slow — coordinate with tank on whether kiting is desired
Polymorph Hard CC on priority mob — sheep the healer or a problem caster
Dragon's Breath Short-duration AoE disorient — offensive setup for Polymorph chain
Slow Single-target 60% movement slow — any mob trying to escape or chase

Focus kick macro:

/cast [@focus,exists] [@target] Counterspell

Frost Mage — PvP

Overview

Frost Mage is consistently one of the strongest caster specs in PvP. Unmatched crowd control through Polymorph chaining, relentless slows, and strong burst. "One Polymorph can turn an entire game around."

Key PvP-Specific Talents

Hero Talent for PvP: Frostfire (higher burst ceiling; Glacial Spike explosions deal AoE on clumped targets)

PvP Stat Priority: Intellect > Versatility > Haste > Mastery > Critical Strike

PvP Priority

  1. Set up Polymorph chains on healer
  2. Dragon's Breath for offensive CC setup
  3. Ring of Frost for zone control
  4. Ray of Frost + Comet Storm as burst combo
  5. Ice Lance with Fingers of Frost as instant damage
  6. Maintain slows (Frostbolt slows passively, Frozen Orb)

Burst Window (healer in CC):
Frozen Orb → Flurry (Brain Freeze) → Ice Lance (Thermal Void + Fingers of Frost) → Glacial Spike → Comet Storm

Arcane Mage

Overview

Midnight changes:
- Mana management loop reworked — burst window more front-loaded, Mana recovery phase shorter

Hero Talents

Sunfury (recommended Raid / burst)
- Focuses on Arcane Surge windows; amps the Arcane Surge + Touch of the Magi combo to extreme levels
- Spellfire Spheres proc from Arcane Blast and empower your Arcane Surge cast
- Higher burst ceiling; best for raid fights with defined damage windows
- Requires precise timing around the 60-second Arcane Surge cooldown

Spellslinger (recommended M+ / more consistent)
- Spellfrost Teachings adds proc-based supplemental damage between burst windows
- Less reliant on perfect Surge timing — consistent output throughout the fight
- More forgiving; recommended if unfamiliar with Arcane's Mana management loop
- Slightly lower burst ceiling but higher floor

Tier Set — Mage Arcane 12.0

Core Mechanics

Arcane Charges (0–4):
- Built by: Arcane Blast (+1 per cast), Arcane Orb (+1), Arcane Barrage procs
- At 4 charges: Arcane Blast damage +200%, Arcane Barrage generates 15% Mana per charge (60% total at 4)
- Arcane Barrage spends ALL charges — reset to 0 and regenerate Mana
- Never spend Arcane Barrage during Arcane Surge (you lose the 4-charge amp for the rest of the window)

Mana Management:
- Arcane is the only spec in the game where Mana is a primary rotational resource
- Outside burst: weave Arcane Barrage resets to stay at 70%+ Mana
- During Surge: ignore Mana, spend everything; recover via Evocation after Surge ends
- Evocation (6s channel): restores full Mana; use after Arcane Surge once Surge ends

Clearcasting:
- Procs from Arcane Blast and Arcane Missiles final ticks (via Resonance talent)
- Makes next Arcane Missiles instant and free (Illuminated Thoughts: also makes Arcane Blast free)
- Never waste Clearcasting stacks — consume immediately or hold for Arcane Surge window
- Maximum 2 stacks; don't overcap

Touch of the Magi:
- 8-second debuff that stores a portion of all Arcane damage dealt, then explodes for stored damage
- Must be cast at 4 Arcane Charges for full value
- Highest single-target priority; pairs with Arcane Surge for massive detonation

Rotation — Single Target (Sunfury)

Opener:
1. Arcane Blast × 4 (build to 4 charges) — pre-cast starts at −2s
2. Touch of the Magi (at 4 charges)
3. Arcane Surge + potion + trinket (simultaneously at 4 charges)
4. Arcane Blast spam (every cast crit-buffed by Surge)
5. Arcane Missiles on Clearcasting procs — consume during Surge window
6. Evocation when Surge ends and Mana is low
7. Continue with priority list

Core Priority:
| Priority | Ability | Why |
|----------|---------|-----|
| 1 | Touch of the Magi | 60s CD; detonate all stored Arcane damage; cast at 4 charges always |
| 2 | Arcane Surge | 60s CD; align with Touch of the Magi; use at 4 charges for maximum amp |
| 3 | Arcane Blast × 4 | Build to 4 charges before every Surge + Touch of the Magi window |
| 4 | Arcane Missiles (Clearcasting) | Instant, free; consume stacks; high priority inside Surge window |
| 5 | Arcane Orb (if talented) | On cooldown; AoE charge builder; always at least 1 charge gained |
| 6 | Arcane Barrage | Spend at 4 charges when Mana is below 40% or between Surge windows; restores Mana |
| 7 | Evocation | After Arcane Surge when Mana is depleted; never interrupt for damage abilities |
| 8 | Arcane Blast | Filler — builds charges, procs Clearcasting |

Key rules:
- NEVER use Arcane Barrage during Arcane Surge — you lose the 4-charge damage amp
- NEVER overcap 2 Clearcasting stacks — if at 2, consume before casting Arcane Blast again
- Mana below 20% outside Surge = immediate Evocation; you are not contributing while low on Mana

Rotation — AoE (M+, 3+ Targets)

Cooldowns

Cooldown CD Usage
Arcane Surge 60s Primary DPS cooldown; align with Touch of the Magi; use at 4 charges; never hold more than 5s
Touch of the Magi 60s Highest priority; triggers Arcane Surge detonation; always at 4 charges
Evocation 3 min (reduced by Arcane Surge talent) Full Mana recovery; use immediately after Surge ends when depleted
Presence of Mind (if talented) 45s Makes next Arcane Blast or Arcane Missiles instant; use inside Surge window

Defensives

Defensive CD Effect
Prismatic Barrier Low CD Absorbs damage + reduces magic damage received; use proactively
Ice Block 5 min Full immunity; strongest button you have
Alter Time 1 min Rewinds your HP and position; very strong for positioning saves
Greater Invisibility 2 min Drops combat and DoTs; brief damage reduction while fading; use for repositioning or avoiding an unavoidable
Shimmer 15s (2 charges) Instant movement; cast-while-moving for 1 GCD

Stat Priority

PvE: Intellect > Haste > Critical Strike > Mastery > Versatility
- Haste reduces Arcane Blast cast time (more Arcane Surge window GCDs) and speeds Evocation recovery
- Critical Strike amplifies Arcane Surge burst windows significantly — Mage crits hit hard
- Mastery: Savant increases Arcane Blast and Arcane Barrage damage based on current Mana percentage — valuable at full Mana (before Surge)
- Always sim on Raidbots — Arcane stat weights shift between Sunfury and Spellslinger

PvP: Intellect > Versatility > Haste > Critical Strike > Mastery

Consumables

Slot Item
Flask Flask of the Magisters (Intellect)
Potion Potion of Recklessness
Food Royal Roast / Harandar Celebration Feast
Weapon Thalassian Phoenix Oil
Rune Void-Touched Augment Rune
Gem (first) Indecipherable Eversong Diamond
Gem (rest) Sim — Haste or Crit depending on your distribution

Crest Upgrade Priority: Weapon → Trinkets → Helmet/Chest/Legs → other slots

Fire Mage

Overview

Midnight changes:
- Combustion tuned alongside Frostfire Hero Talent integration
- Kindling reduces Combustion CD via critical direct damage hits
- Dragon's Breath now interacts with Combustion in specific talent builds

Hero Talents

Frostfire (recommended general use / M+)
- Adds Frostfire Bolt, which benefits from both Frost and Fire Mastery synergies
- Frostfire Bolt procs are available outside Combustion windows — consistent supplemental damage
- Frostfire Explosion: Glacial Spike explodes on impact near Fire Mage context — adds AoE burst
- Recommended default starting point; simpler to execute correctly

Sunfury (recommended Raid ST)
- Sun King's Blessing: builds stacks from non-Combustion Pyroblasts; at 8 stacks, empowers next Pyroblast massively
- Requires precise tracking of Sun King's Blessing stacks relative to Combustion windows
- Higher single-target ceiling; slightly lower AoE
- More complex; rewards players who can manage the stacking mechanic precisely

Tier Set — Mage Fire 12.0

Core Mechanics

Hot Streak:
- Requires two consecutive crit hits to proc (first crit → Heating Up; second crit → Hot Streak)
- Hot Streak: enables one free instant Pyroblast — consume before it expires
- Critical rule: If you have Heating Up, use Fire Blast (guaranteed crit) to convert it to Hot Streak immediately

Heating Up vs Hot Streak:
- Heating Up = first crit landed. Fire Blast or Phoenix Flames will convert it to Hot Streak
- Hot Streak = spend on Pyroblast now. Do not hold it; do not cast Fireball with Hot Streak active
- Common mistake: casting Fireball while Heating Up is active instead of converting to Hot Streak with Fire Blast

Fire Blast:
- 2 charges baseline; guaranteed crit; instant cast
- Primary tool for converting Heating Up → Hot Streak
- Inside Combustion: use to generate as many Hot Streaks as possible
- Outside Combustion: use when Heating Up is active; never waste charges while at cap

Phoenix Flames:
- 2 charges; guaranteed crit; cleaves nearby targets
- Excellent for AoE Hot Streak generation and Ignite spreading
- Use like Fire Blast when Heating Up is active; preferred in AoE scenarios

Combustion:
- 2-minute cooldown (reduced by Kindling talent); 100% critical strike chance for ~12s
- Every Fireball and Pyroblast crits automatically → guaranteed Hot Streak chain
- Goal: maximize Pyroblasts during Combustion
- Sequence: pre-build Fire Blast/Phoenix Flames charges → pop Combustion + potion + trinket → Pyroblast spam

Ignite:
- DoT applied by every damaging spell; crits apply stronger Ignite
- Ignite spreading via Phoenix Flames is the primary AoE tool in M+
- Combustion window builds maximum Ignite → spreads to whole pack

Rotation — Single Target (Frostfire)

Combustion Opener:
1. Fireball (pre-cast, −2s before pull) — build Heating Up
2. Fire Blast (convert Heating Up → Hot Streak if proc)
3. Combustion + potion + trinket simultaneously
4. Pyroblast (Hot Streak — instant)
5. Fire Blast (guaranteed crit → Heating Up → another Hot Streak immediately)
6. Pyroblast (Hot Streak — instant)
7. Repeat Fire Blast → Pyroblast chain for the duration of Combustion
8. Phoenix Flames when Fire Blast charges are depleted
9. Fireball fills any gap (crits automatically during Combustion)

Core Priority (outside Combustion):
| Priority | Ability | Why |
|----------|---------|-----|
| 1 | Combustion | On cooldown (every 2 min, reduced by Kindling). Never hold. Every second outside Combustion is lost damage. |
| 2 | Fire Blast (Heating Up active) | Convert Heating Up to Hot Streak immediately; do not delay |
| 3 | Pyroblast (Hot Streak proc) | Consume immediately — instant, free, very high damage |
| 4 | Phoenix Flames (Heating Up active) | Alternative to Fire Blast for Hot Streak generation; prefer in AoE |
| 5 | Scorch (moving) | Uninterruptible; generates Heating Up while moving; do not waste GCDs on Fireball while moving |
| 6 | Dragon's Breath (if talented) | On cooldown; provides Heating Up and disorient |
| 7 | Fireball | Primary filler; 18% crit chance baseline; builds Heating Up; generates Ignite |

Sun King's Blessing (Sunfury) tracking:
- Every non-Combustion Pyroblast builds a Sun King's Blessing stack (target: 8 stacks)
- At 8 stacks, your next Pyroblast outside Combustion is enormously empowered
- Do not consume the 8-stack proc inside Combustion — the free empowered Pyroblast is stronger outside where it doesn't compete with Combustion's built-in crits
- This means you should watch the stack count as Combustion ends and time your 8-stack release for the seconds immediately after Combustion fades

Rotation — AoE (M+, 3+ Targets)

Cooldowns

Cooldown CD Usage
Combustion 2 min (Kindling reduces by 1s per crit direct damage hit) Core DPS cooldown. On cooldown. Maximizing Pyroblast casts inside Combustion is your entire job.
Fire Blast Low (2 charges) Guaranteed crit; Hot Streak generator; primary Combustion tool
Phoenix Flames Medium (2 charges) Guaranteed crit cleave; Hot Streak + AoE Ignite spreader
Dragon's Breath 45s AoE disorient; Heating Up on all targets; excellent Combustion setup opener

Defensives

Defensive CD Effect
Fire Ward (Prismatic Barrier) Low Magic absorb + damage reduction
Ice Block 5 min Full immunity; strongest button
Alter Time 1 min Rewind HP and position; strong save
Greater Invisibility 2 min Drops combat and DoTs; damage reduction while fading; use to avoid an unavoidable or reposition
Shimmer 15s (2 charges) Instant movement — Fire uses Shimmer constantly; keep it in muscle memory

Stat Priority

PvE: Intellect > Critical Strike > Haste > Versatility > Mastery
- Critical Strike is the primary Fire stat — generates Hot Streak procs and amplifies Combustion window value
- Haste reduces Fireball cast time (more GCDs inside Combustion) and speeds Fire Blast recharge
- Mastery: Ignite increases the DoT applied by each spell — scales with number of crits landed; good in Combustion windows
- Versatility provides consistent flat damage and damage reduction — solid all-around value
- Always sim on Raidbots — Fire stat weights shift between Frostfire and Sunfury

PvP: Intellect > Versatility > Critical Strike > Haste > Mastery

Consumables

Slot Item
Flask Flask of the Magisters (Intellect)
Potion Potion of Recklessness (pop at Combustion)
Food Royal Roast / Harandar Celebration Feast
Weapon Thalassian Phoenix Oil
Rune Void-Touched Augment Rune
Gem (first) Indecipherable Eversong Diamond
Gem (rest) Sim — Critical Strike gems generally strong for Fire

Crest Upgrade Priority: Weapon → Trinkets → Helmet/Chest/Legs → other slots
